Most bad design experiences are avoidable — the warning signs usually show up before you've paid anything, if you know what to look for.

Portfolio red flags

  • Every project looks nearly identical, regardless of the client's industry.
  • Only final logos are shown — no process, no concepts, no full brand systems.
  • Testimonials that are vague ("great to work with!") rather than specific about outcomes.

Process red flags

  • "Unlimited revisions" with no defined process — often a sign of no real design methodology.
  • Extremely fast turnaround (a full identity in 48 hours) that leaves no time for actual strategy.
  • No discovery questions before jumping to concepts.

Business red flags

  • Reluctance to put deliverables, timeline or ownership terms in writing.
  • Pricing dramatically below the market range with no clear explanation why.
  • Pressure to decide immediately, with discounts that expire "today only."

The short version

Watch for repetitive portfolios, vague process, no written terms, and pricing or urgency that feels off. Any one of these alone isn't disqualifying, but two or three together is worth walking away from.
